Live Performance: El Dog- A Princess, A Monkey, The Stars and The Sea

Here is an excellent live performance from Glasgow post-rockers, El Dog.  The song is off their debut record, The Lamps of Terrahead

The band recently shared a few songs off the record on our website. Check them out below! My personal favorite is the song, If That Was the Last That We Met.

Blurb about The Lamps of Terrahead:

"This is a pleasant surprise. Seemingly picking up the torch laid down during the unfortunate demise of Aerogramme, El Dog don't so much wear their hearts on their sleeves as bleed their inner emotions out through their pores, wrapping their introverted frustrations in layers of Smashing Pumpkins-style distortion. Eschewing traditional song structures for a more cinematic scope, their songs often pass through vast chasms of huge riffs, before settling into whispered intimacies that push the quiet-loud dynamic to its very limits. While El Dog cite Death Cab's Transatlanticism as a point of reference, the pseudo-poetry spouted by Ben Gibbard is instead replaced by a to-the-point lyricism that cuts the bullshit; while Gibbard creates characters, El Dog can't escape the strictures of their own apparently messy and awkward lives." -The Skinny

MumboJumbo

Some know him as Lappingtop Macley, Sir Choppington BeatMeister, Slicey McDicey, or The Noisemaker of Northampton (I just made that up), but I merely know him as the random bloke on bandcamp that put together one hell of a beat tape this past May.

MumboJumbo is an emerging DJ/Producer from the UK that has just recently begun to share his creations with the internet. My first taste was the minimalistic Cut N Paste Chemistry freebie that will instantly conjure up Madlib comparisons. This condensed chemical spill highlights Mumbo's endless potential and expert ear. Each beat is crisp, clean, infectious, and addicting, making withdrawals that much harder to cope with. Make sure to bookmark this methadone pack because the cold turkey is hard to swallow.

MumboJumbo is also part of The Fungle Brothers; a 1930's revival Swing-Hop duo alongside fellow producer, Odjbox.

Side note: The zip file contains a periodic table of ingredients (sample cheat sheet) used in the tape.

Soup of the Day #11: Dragon King- Altamont Sunrise

Dominic Angelella is a tall and lanky fellow with fire ant colored Jesus-hair and an unkempt beard, which is a perfect picture to paint of the man behind the divine vocals of Philadelphia based indie pop quartet, Dragon King.

The quarter lived singer and guitarist started Dragon King as a studio project with producer Ritz Reynolds. The project began as an exercise in collaboration and experimentation and evolved into a four piece band in late 2010. The band's first output, Warriors EP, is a tasty psychedelic-electro-pop sandwich with the upbeat tracks "Wolfboy" (ft. Peedi Crakk) and "Wild Night" serving as the crunchy toast and "Altamont Sunrise" and "Warriors" as the mouth watering meat.

The standout cut from the EP is, without a doubt, the anthem for planetary exodus, "Altamont Sunrise." The Ritz blitzed, Toro Y Moi-esque spaced out tapestry is the gravity between Angelella and his simplistic yet beautiful lyrics. The end product: cosmic.

FM Pilots (Pop/Rock) --  Packed with chiming guitars, soaring vocals and an immediately memorable chorus, “No Time to Waste” simply feels like summer.

Mitten (Indie Pop) -- Little Dragon-ish. After applying for the same Craigslist job five years ago, singer Maia Macdonald and producer Joanna Katcher bonded over whiskey and salt bagels. In late 2009, the pair began timidly emailing eachother song ideas and soon began writing music together as Mitten.

Swift Science (Blues Rock) -- Swift Science is a blues-rock trio from Boone, North Carolina, started by Guitarist/Lead Vocalist JD Rust. After parting ways with Asheville-based Do it to Julia in July of 2009, Rust began writing songs for a brand new project of his own influenced by R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, The Black Keys, and the White Stripes (RIP).

The Crow Murder (Metal) -- A five piece metal band rising out of the cultural melting pot that is the UAE. Bringing together a vast diversity of influences The Crow Murder creates a sound all of their own. Started at the end of 2008 so still a band in its infancy they have quickly established a good fan base in the UAE. Renowned for their energetic live shows in the region this band is hell bent on securing their position as the next big thing to come out of the current metal surge from the Middle East.

Death Grips (Experimental Hip Hop) --  Almost a year ago, Zach Hill started jamming with some friends and neighbors around his hometown of Sacramento, CA. Soup of the Day #10: Greenhorse- Sunbreak

"Greenhorse delivers nothing but audacious electronic coated pop ear candy... The duo's kaleidoscope effect, reminiscent of M83's smooth vocals and MGMT's playful psychedelic pop, is fresh and enchanting." - NYC Scene - Margarita Castellanos

Greenhorse is an emerging post-pop trio featuring Chris Hackman, Shawn Day and Joel Saur, who first met at an antique music store in Wyoming. Following an online collaboration in 2009, while Day was living in London, Hackman in Los Angeles, and Saur in South Africa, they formed Greenhorse. The LA-based group recently recorded their second EP at Pachyderm Studios with Brent Sigmeth (Nirvana, Wilco, Polyphonic Spree).

Remember, you can always click "more songs" on the main page or click into the search box, press the space bar once, and hit enter to see the latest uploads in order.

Click the band's name to hear their music!

Reader's Wives (Indie Rock)
“With shades of Pulp, The Smiths & early Arctic Monkeys, the Wives have both catchy, upbeat get-off-your-arse-&-dance numbers and bittersweet, melancholic tunes offset by Holohan’s sharp, observant lyrics" - HOT PRESS   Saints of Valory (Alternative Rock)   From four different countries spanning three continents, Saints of Valory come with quite the international flair. Frontman Gavin Jasper is from Rio de Janeiro Brazil, guitarist Godfrey Thomson from southern California, on drums Gerard Bouvier is from France, & on keyboards Stephen Buckle hails from Canada. The band kicked off in Austin after SXSW 2010 & already have a rapidly growing fan base due in part to their live show which is best described as "electric".
Black Sun Empire (Dubstep/Electronic)
Black Sun Empire represent the finest in dark and techy dancefloor drum and bass. Since bursting onto the scene back in 2000, they’ve continued to develop their own unique style and sound, releasing numerous singles as well as four full-length LPs
Bop Skizzum (Alternative Pop-Rock)
Since it's founding more than ten years ago Bop Skizzum has always taken pleasure in concocting songs that enable you to blow off some steam by getting on the floor and burning it up. Screaming horn lines, block-rocking beats, and lyrics squarely stamped with Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" seal of approval all point to one thing: Bop Skizzum's mission is to make you dance.   Wheeler Brothers (Folk/Indie Rock) Formed in Austin, Texas, Wheeler Brothers have quickly emerged as one of Austin's most exciting up-and-coming bands. The five-piece independent folk-rock act combines the indie vibe of Austin with the twang of Texas folk.    Taught Abroad (Electro Rock)  Electronic Indie Rock from Chicago. Self Titled EP available now for a free download!   El Dog (Indie Rock)  El Dog. The lovable four piece from Glasgow. Their debut album "The Lamps Of Terrahead" was released in 2009 to much critical acclaim. "So impressively put together, it’s hard to believe that this is the Glasgow four piece’s debut album." - 4/5 Shout 4 Music   Mei Ohara (Electric Violin/Electronica)  Electric violin meets electronic space dust!   Telepathic Teddy Bear (Electro Pop)  "Infectious electro pop." Here is a song from the 2010 record, Reactions.   Showstar (Indie Pop)  Monkey See Monkey Do (produced by Richard Formby, known for his highly acclaimed work with Wild Beasts, Mogwai and Spectrals) continues the trend with a beautifully honest and tellingly resigned dissection of isolation and uncertainty. It’s another song about loneliness, retrogaming, mind control and socialization paradox   Sidewalk Dave (Indie Rock)  Sidewalk Dave formed in 2007 under the name “Sidewalk Dave” which was originally the lead singer’s (Dave Van Witt) nickname. Van Witt was named Sidewalk Dave after championing an unusual childhood that left him homeless at 16 years old. Now with the lesson of camaraderie burnt in his mind, the 4 members play for what Sidewalk Dave represents; courage, brotherhood, booze, and the importance of a good woman in your arms.
Hypocrite in a Hippy Crypt (Psychedelic Folk)

An album about crazy people, oceans, and murder.
Recorded in the basement of a dorm, spawned from craziness and late nights.

A Matter Gray (Alternative Rock)

Composer and Los Angeles musician Jeehun brings you A MATTER GRAY. Rooted in pop-rock with a 5-piece band arrangement, the musical style of A MATTER GRAY readily diverges into other genres as the songs require. Wide ranging influences include 70s classic rock, 80s pop & 90s grunge/alternative.

BandSoup Presents: The Awkard Robot's Souper Sweaty Summer Tour

Austin, Texas based folk duo, The Awkward Robot, are busy packing up their van with Lonestar and Cup-o-Noodles in preparation for their Souper Sweaty Summer Tour; a 7-date trek that has the Texas troubadours slithering through the south and up the east coast playing hot spots in New Orleans, Charlotte, Nashua, Boston, Cambridge, and a double dip in Brooklyn.

After the success of their self titled debut EP, Jason Martins (Vocals, Baritone Uke) and Javier Martinez (Banjo, Keys) decided it was time to take their blend of banjo/ukelele laced blues and modern folk to the road. Perfect timing!

As the heat waves continue to torture us all, TAR's chill music serves as a perfect summertime accessory. Their sound is both breezy and mellow and Jason Martins vocals will slide smoothly down your ear canal like water beads down a frosty beer mug. Combine this with Javier's infectious accompanying arrangements, and The Awkward Robot is sure to become your new go to soundtrack to unwind in the shade with.

Above is the first promo video from The Awkward Robot and below are the locations and dates. If you are in the area, make sure to stop by and support the emerging duo and BandSoup.com.

Red Fang

Prowling through the progressive pines of the Pacific Northwest are independent metal's best kept secret-- Red Fang. This uber talented quartet took their collective talents and experiences from their former bands and formed like Voltron to create a new powerhouse in Portland's rock and roll scene. Instead of regurgitating past methods and influences, Red Fang agreed to build their sound around what initially inspired them to become musicians in the first place-- heavy, galvanizing hard rock and roll that is accessible and straight forward, as well as sophisticated and layered. This infectious form of metal is consummately displayed in their latest record, Murder The Mountains, released April 2011 on the acclaimed Relapse Records label.

Murder the Mountains' 10-track body is piss drunk off of thundering, down-tempo, psychedelic sludge and splashes of vintage metal. The sound is one half Mastadon, one half Black Sabbath mixed warm and chased down slow with a case of hot Pabst. The hangover will have you hallucinating, but the trip through layers of thick heavy metal riffs, distortion, rumbling drums, and contagious vocals are well worth the after affects. If the first go around didn't blow you away enough, wait for the second and third spin as the record slowly unveils its true self, revealing numerous nuances and exciting arrangements that you most likely didn't catch before.

Red Fang has accomplished one of the best and accessible hard rock albums I have heard in years. Combine their experience, talent, taste, and charisma and you have one unstoppable metal monster that is ready to take over the planet and put Portland on the map for something other than dirty hippies and coffee.

Below is the awesome video for the single "Wires":

This Week on BandSoup (5/30 - 6/6)

Another week in the books and yet another week of great uploads here on BandSoup! Here are a few of the bands that you must hear in case you missed them spinning in the bowl. Remember, you can always click "more songs" on the main page or click into the search box, press the space bar once, and hit enter to see the latest uploads in order.

Click the band's name to hear their music!

Rachel Louise (Singer/Songwriter) -- Rachel is currently residing in the Netherlands and working hard on her debut album. Her songs reveal the expertise of a songwriter and artist beyond her 21 years. Her stage performance is thoroughly entertaining as she is able to relate to an audience of all ages on a personal level. Rachel Louise is a singer/songwriter with pop influences comparable to Maria Mena, Adele, and Vanessa Carlton.

Teenage Kicks (Rock) -- Hailing from Toronto, the quartet - vocalist/guitarist Peter Van Helvoort, bassist Jeff Van Helvoort, guitarist Pat Marchent and drummer Cameron Brunt - satisfy all aspects of the rock spectrum within the confined space of their EP's six songs. Here is a song from the EP, Rational Anthems.

Count to Four (Pop Punk) -- Remember the first time you heard Jimmy Eat World? How about Anberlin? Or when you got your hands on an old Fall Out Boy record? Count to Four knows that feeling: launching out of the real world and into the pop punk universe. A place where even the most vexing problems could be solved or at least addressed in three-minute blasts of galloping drums, charging guitars and lyrics that sound like they’re being sung from the top of a mountain.

Hail Mary Mallon (Alternative Hip Hop) -- After years of performing live together and appearing on each other’s solo albums, critically acclaimed mc’s/producers Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic, along with DJ Big Wiz, come together as Hail Mary Mallon and deliver their Rhymesayers debut Are You Gonna Eat That?.

Shes Got a Habit (Indie Pop) --
The trio began developing their sound, playing with a mix of live drums, samples, and layered voices. They shared a background in hip-hop and jazz and wanted to fuse the heavy beats and lush production styles they loved with softer, more intimate, sounds. The blend they found is both dreamy and momentous, combining hushed vocals and room sounds with glowing synths and huge drums.

GraveRobbers (Americana/Alt-Country) --
While the band prefers to remain ‘genre-less’, you can’t help but tag them with labels like ‘americana’, ‘country’, ‘indie’, and even ‘folk.’ After a handful of different ‘demos’ of home recordings, GraveRobbers recently hit the studio and recorded 12 songs; releasing a 7 song EP entitled “Black Market EP.” With plans for the remaining 5 songs, they are already writing new material and making plans for yet another recording session.

Co$$ (Hip Hop) --
Troy “Co$$” Johnson was born on the South Westside of Los Angeles in a small community east of Crenshaw called “Leimert Park” one of the United State’s top spots for Jazz and home to many of LA‘s finest hip hop artists. He started rapping at the age of 14. These are tracks from his latest free mix tape, Sleepwalking.

Full Crate & Mar (Neo Soul) --
Full Crate (Producer) and Mar (Singer) team up to bring you an incredible blend of sultry soul, hip hop, and R & B.

Itchy Hearts (Folk/Indie Rock) --
Quirky and infectious indie folk from Richmond, Virginia (now residing in Brooklyn, NY).

Red Fang (Rock) --
Red Fang deals in kick-ass heavy rock. On their Chris Funk (DECEMBERISTS) produced, Vance Powell (KINGS OF LEON, WHITE STRIPES, RACONTEURS) mixed Relapse debut Murder the Mountains, the quartet wave a middle finger at fashion and bet the proverbial house on substance over style. The incredible “Wires”, “Number Thirteen”, "Hank Is Dead", and "The Undertow" are just a few of an onslaught of highlights on this front-to-back set of great f%$king songs.

Balor's Eye (Tech Metal) -- With no musical, political, or societal agenda, Balor’s Eye is merely striving to write great music for people to enjoy. Many bands plan out their style, or what kind of songs they want to write, or a certain aspect of uniqueness they want to embody, but Balor’s Eye is simply four dudes pushing themselves as far as possible musically. With the utmost respect for music and dedication to their craft, they create a sound that is very progressive, powerful, technical, groovy, and authentic.

Sky Came Burning (Metal) --  Founded in June 2009, Sky Came Burning is the premier 5 piece metalcore band fresh out of Baltimore. They're looking to change the industry by bringing classic rock/metal roots mixed with today’s heavy/metalcore style to give you a very unique sound and performance.

Video: Agent I- Welcome to the Agency

A random video transmission has just been sent through the spy wires of the blogosphere underground. A pin hole jacket camera has revealed a band identified as Agent I. Names unknown, genre unknown, history unknown.

This relatively new quartet is said to be causing quite a ruckus around Washington DC and surrounding areas up and down Interstate 95, blending 80s new wave, industrial, and alternative rock into one beguiling brew. Reports from numerous sources state the agents have launched a tactical recruitment mission and have begun to spread their word via musical displays. This transmission is said to be their last recruitment meeting. Setting unknown.

Not much is known about these four agents. Perhaps their message is embedded in the riddles within their music.

This message will self destruct in 5.....4.....

Soup of the Day # 9: The Uniques- Mud & Grit

In an attempt to look cool in front of any looming hipsters and people under the Pitchfork umbrella, I have decided to toss up a synthpop/electroclash record from a Slovakia trio for our 9th Soup of the Day. How's that for obscure?

From the "fall of the Iron Curtain" generation comes a electrifying trio equipped with upbeat clashes of sounds from the 60s, 70s, 80s and today that are mashed together amongst layers of synthetic waves, spastic drums, and danceable retro arrangements. This is 1980s dance club meets The Faint meets the new era of electronic rock, and these boys from Bratislava know how to bring the noise.

"Mud & Grit" is one of the catchier tunes from their 2010 unveiling, From the Dust, which was awarded by critics as the top Slovakian album of that year. The flailing beat in the background controls the motion of the track as lead singer Pista Kralovic rides it with ease. The danceable tune is also highlighted by various sprinkles of electronic noise, chimes, and background vocals that add body to an already infectious skeleton that will have you moving your body to dust.

Video: Hail Mary Mallon- Garfield

Here is the latest video from Hail Mary Mallon (Aesop Rock + Rob Sonic + DJ Big Wiz) for the song "Garfield" off their recent album, Are You Gonna Eat That?, available now on iTunes and other digital retailers.

After years of performing live together and appearing on each other’s solo albums, critically acclaimed mc’s/producers Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic, along with DJ Big Wiz, come together as Hail Mary Mallon and deliver their Rhymesayers debut Are You Gonna Eat That?. The name and album title are inspired by Mary Mallon aka Typhoid Mary, the first person in the U.S. identified as a healthy carrier of the pathogen associated with typhoid fever. Mary Mallon was presumed to have infected 53 people, three of whom died, over the course of her career as a cook. She spent three years in quarantine, which is where she died.
