In Case You Missed Them: Rx Bandits

This Week: Rx Bandits

There are many words that could describe the sound of Rx Bandits (aka The Pharmaceutical Bandits): ska, reggae, punk, progressive rock, alternative rock. And all of these genres would be spot on descriptions of this multifaceted Southern California based band. Formed in 1995 in Orange County, the Rx Bandits have rocked stages on the Vans Warped tour, Bonnaroo, Coachella, and The Bamboozle Fest.
Originally known as The Pharmaceutical Bandits, the band began their career by participating in the third wave ska revival of the 1990s. In 1997, they released Those Damn Bandits, which featured guest appearances by Jimmy the Robot of the Aquabats and Chris Colonnier of Jeffries Fan Club and The Forces of Evil. Noting the Bandits' potential, a Los Angeles Times review of the album said "Now comes a young, talented ska band, the Pharmaceutical Bandits. It would be OK with me if the Grinch spared them but swiped their ska records and left a shelf of Who, Clash, Bob Marley, Elvis Costello and Neil Young."[1] Matt Embree attended Los Alamitos High School, which was an incubator for other third wave ska bands such as Reel Big Fish, Save Ferris, and The Scholars.
After 7 full length albums and years of touring, the band decided to give fans a proper send off in the form of a farewell tour. Their final shows, consisting of 36 performances spanning from May 4th to August 7th was announced in April of this year. Although this was announced as their “last tour,” the band has not officially announced a break up. However, if you ask any true RX fan, the RX Bandits have ended their legacy.

Guitarist Steve Choi said: "To clarify, we’re not breaking up. We’re just doing our last tour. What we’re gonna do in the future, we’re not quite sure. That’s a big question because it involves what we’re going to do collectively and what we’re going to do individually. Despite popular belief, we don’t live together, sleep together or eat together. Those days have passed. We all have our own lives to tend to. When we’re not full time touring or playing shows, we gotta handle business…"

Bop Skizzum- I'm So Much Cooler Than You & Beauty Queen

Here are two videos from Denver's Bop Skizzum. Both songs can be found on their Beauty Queen EP.

Music has the power to get people dancing and Bop Skizzum likes to take full advantage of that.  Gathering inspiration from every corner of the record store, the band meshes their alternative pop rock vibe with groovy funk, rock, ska, and dance music, creating an invigorating blend of unique instrumentation and infectious vocals.

NYU trained soul singer Erin Jo Harris fronts Bop Skizzum as the lead vocalist.  Guitar & Back-up Vocals are handled by band co-founder Andy “Rok” Guerrero, formerly of the socio-political hip-hop rock band The Flobots.  Fellow co-founder and the band’s Music Director Serafin Sanchez (a CU Boulder graduate with a Master’s Degree in Jazz Music) provides one of the ‘3rd voices’ (in the form of brass) in Bop Skizzum with the Saxophone. This inspiring song writing trio is grounded by the incredible rhythm section of groove master Chris Harris on Bass and multiple award winning beat savant Tohbias Juniel on Drums. Rounding out the brass section are the two-man Trumpet power-punch of Joe Ferrone and John Lake.

The band has been compared to No Doubt, The Heavy, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and N.E.R.D.

Triple Drop

Hailing from the "black pool", aka Dublin, Ireland, Triple Drop has picked up where The Clash, The Specials, and The Pogues left off. Combining a DIY aesthetic with the powers of punk, ska, and rock and roll, the trio have been causing a ruckus since they first met in 2009, securing the '09 Noise Battle of the Bands title and 200+ gigs around Ireland.

Their debut self titled EP showcases four of the band's most lethal tracks to date. The intro single, "In Yur Smokey Lil' Room", screams WORLDWIDE HIT due to its infectious back beat and groovy melody.  "Extra Extra" has a more ballsy rock and roll sound, but still retains Triple Drop's signature groove deep within the production, especially at the halfway point when the song transitions into a danceable Devo-esque swing. "Radio" is another potential hit, mixing vintage ska sounds with popular 90s riffs and change ups. This song, along with "In Yur Smokey Lil' Room", would have given every band in the early 90s a run for their money and would have solidified Triple Drop has the go to band for every alt-ska soundtracked college movie in the states. The final recording, "Wake Up", sounds more like a demo compared to the rest, but still secures Triple Drop as one of the more exciting emerging ska acts in the world today.

Ska has been missing on the airwaves and in music conversations within the states for some time now. The spritely reggae influenced vibes that a few bands blossomed with have now morphed into emotional alternative rock or a hijacked 311 vibe, but fear not. For those that miss the beautiful danceable aura of Ska music, Triple Drop embodies the heart and soul of the genre while adding their own modern twist. Judging by their debut EP, it will be this little Irish band that will have everybody skankin' in the streets again.
